![]() But developer Tequila Works has done a number on me. The trailers had us thinking the game, which is exclusive to Google's Stadia streaming service, was a horror-lite title, something for kids and the easily spooked. I'd glanced over the game's bumf and screenshots with curiosity but met its Teen rating with a derisory chuckle. I'm ashamed to say I came into Gylt a little smug. This world may look sweet and innocent with its Play-Doh colours and cartoonish aesthetics, but - as I'm belatedly realising - it's anything but. Not for the first time, I realise I'm not entirely sure what's going on. I realise there's nowhere else to go, and the panic intensifies. I grab my flashlight and wave it vaguely in its direction - I say vaguely because it's leaping about a lot and I'm panicking here - but it's ineffectual. Screeching with delight, it launches itself at me, face splitting in two to reveal a horrifying, pulsing void as it scurries after me, trying to suck me in. I risk peering over the top and instantly regret it: I've been spotted. "Come here," it adds in its sweet, musical voice. It lurches drunkenly from side to side, eyes glowing in the inky blackness of the room, head spinning at unnatural angles as it scans the space, primed for the slightest flicker of movement. "You can trust me," it says, as I tip-toe as swiftly as I dare into a dark corner, concealing myself - I hope - against a pile of damp, forgotten boxes. And the time-looping mysteries of The Sexy Brutale was one of Edwin Evans-Thirlwell’s favourite games from that year.Tequila Works' teen-rated horror might surprise you with its shocks and creepy atmosphere, but it's a little thin. The stunningly lit island of Rime is one of the best non-violent games around. Tequila Works' last few games have been quite good too. I’ve admittedly not tried the game, but I’m looking to trying its creepy-sweet cartoon world when Gylt comes to consoles and Steam on July 6th. ![]() ![]() In true survival horror fashion, though, your flashlight will soon run out of batteries, forcing you to run, hide, and crawl back into the light. Or you can maybe use that flashlight for - you know - illuminating dark spaces and whatnot. Or you could plunge the torch right into beasts’ backs for a quick stealth kill. Channelling one part of Alan Wake, combat has you aim your flashlight at enemies to burn through their shadow-fuelled armour. The rest of the horror-adjacent adventure is split between puzzles, and choosing between combat or stealth. The only problem is that she’s soon pulled into a shadowy alternate version of her own world where her fears manifest into creepy creatures: smiling mannequins and other gooey things, most of which represent her childhood experience with bullying. When her younger cousin mysteriously goes missing, Sally takes it upon herself to lead the search. Gylt casts you in the role of Sally, a little girl who lives in an old mining town. Tequila Works - the studio behind Rime and The Sexy Brutale - have now announced that their Stadia-exclusive adventure Gylt is heading to Steam and consoles on July 6th, 2023. When Google announced they were shutting down their streaming service Stadia, a bunch of exclusive games began to jump ship to other platforms.
